Title

UPDATE ON PRODUCTION OF THE KAYE STEVENS STATUE

Body

BACKGROUND:

At the March Board meeting, staff provided information and quotes on plaques, bronze busts and statues of Kaye Stevens to be placed in Kaye Stevens Park. At that meeting, the Board requested staff to commission services for a sculptor to create a life size bronze statue of Kaye Stevens and approved a budget for the project in an amount not to exceed $35,000.

At the April meeting the Board approved an agreement with Art & Sculpture Unlimited (ASU), a foundry located in Miami, FL, who provided the lowest quote for creation and installation of the statue and plaque for an amount not to exceed $32,000.  The cost did not include design, construction and installation of a pedestal for placement of the statue.   It is noted that geotechnical tests necessary for the pedestal production and installation are estimated to cost approximately $2,500.

After meeting with the artist, citizens, Engineering and Parks and Recreation, it is recommended that the statue be placed in the southeast corner of the park facing onto Royal Palm Boulevard/NW 58th Avenue. Staff is looking at two scenarios; 1) Place the statue on a two (2) foot high pedestal with a plaque and minor landscaping or 2) make the statue an integral part of the park with sidewalks leading to and around the statue and, to thwart vandalism, enclose the pedestal in a brick surround with landscaping (similar to other features currently in the park).

Regardless of the options chosen it appears that the total budget for the project will exceed the $35,000 limit originally established.  Staff wanted to notify the Board of that likelihood at this time.  Once we have more definitive estimates of the costs we will ask the Board to consider a request for additional funds.

RECOMMENDATION:                     For information only.

FISCAL IMPACT:                     The fiscal impact will depend upon the option chosen--an amendment to the budget will be necessary.
