Title

UPDATES TO THE SW 6TH STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

Body

BACKGROUND:

SW 6th Street is the primary access to the football and soccer fields located at 655 SW 50th Avenue. These fields are utilized by the Parks and Recreation Department to host national sporting events, and visitors from around the country use SW 6th Street to access these playing fields.

The streetscape improvement project will first improve the quality of life for residents by a variety of infrastructure upgrades including the elimination of street flooding and secondly, has the potential to make a lasting impression on visitors and players who will be encouraged to make return visits.

The following data is in regards to project expenditure and timeline, from inception:

The Board directed Staff to move forward with improvements to S.W. 6th Street in July 2021.    The project was to provide streetscape and other related improvements from S.W. 6th Street, from State Road 7 to S.W. 49th Terrace.  Task Order No. 1 was issued in July 2021, in the amount of $53,580.00, for Calvin, Giordano and Associates (CGA), to provide a Feasibility Study with conceptual layouts to include landscaping, median improvements, irrigation, lighting, decorative walkways, monument/fountains, neighborhood entryway signage, traffic calming devices and sealing/restriping of roadway.   The initial conceptual design was presented to the Board and the community on October 13, 2021.  Based on feedback from the Board, CGA were requested to perform additional services related, but not limited to street flooding, drainage, traffic, and parking.  The scope of work was therefore expanded and Task Order No. 2, was issued in February 2022, in the amount of $43,800.00 in favor of CGA.  A final revision of the MCRA S.W. 6th Streetscape Improvements Preliminary Feasibility Study was provided in February, 2023.

Based on their final revision, CGA determined that the cost of improving all three project zones to the standard outlined by the CRA board, is $7,103,011.01. Because the project is divided into three zones construction may also be phased according to available funding. The attached document (Background 1) presents additional details regarding the process and the recommended design option.

RECOMMENDATION:                     Approve the conceptual design with an estimated construction cost of $7,103,011.01.

FISCAL IMPACT:                      $7,103,011.01
