BACKGROUND:

Patrol Officers and School Resource Officers are currently issued a Bushmaster A3 long rifle to respond to active shooter incidents.  The issued Bushmasters are 14 years old and malfunctions are becoming more common and there are concerns the weapon may not function in a time of need.  After careful research the Department recommends the Sig-Sauer SIG400 short-barreled rifle.  The SIG400 weighs less, is easier to manipulate due to ambidextrous controls, and has an 11 inch barrel offering officers more maneuverability in close combat situations.
