RESOLUTION - APPROVING THE ADDITION OF PATRIOT DAY AS A RECOGNIZED HOLIDAY FOR ALL NON-BARGAINED FOR PERSONNEL AND AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO NEGOTIATE WITH THE BARGAINED FOR UNITS; PROVIDING FOR AUTHORITY; PROVIDING FOR EFFECTIVE DATE.

BACKGROUND: Patriot Day was established by Congress in December 2001 (Public Law 107-89) to honor the nearly 3,000 people killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It is federally recognized as Patriot Day and also as the National Day of Service and Remembrance, encouraging Americans to participate in volunteer activities and commemorative events. It is also recognized by the State of Florida as 9/11 Heroes’ Day (Section 683.335 of Florida Statutes).
This agenda item is for the City Commission to approve including September 11th as a recognized holiday for non-bargained for City employees. Further, it authorizes the City Manager to negotiate with the bargaining units to provide the holiday for bargaining unit members.
RECOMMENDATION: For approval.
FISCAL IMPACT: Holiday bank hours are used throughout the fiscal year and do not carry over to the next fiscal year.
