BACKGROUND:

The breathing apparatus currently used by the Margate-Coconut Creek Fire Rescue Department is reaching the end of its lifespan. The current devices, which include high pressure cylinders, breathing regulators, harnesses and face pieces, were purchased in 2005 and are two standard cycles out from the most current National Fire Protection Association standard for Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. The department depends heavily on these units for fire suppression operations to protect firefighters from smoke and toxic chemicals.

The department had initiated planning for the replacement of this equipment in 2013 with placement into the 5-year Capital Budget for FY16. The grant submittal is a regional effort with six other Broward County fire departments to gain efficiencies in costs and gain greater consideration due to the regional impact of standardization of equipment purchases.


RECOMMENDATION: Approve.

FISCAL IMPACT: The total grant amount submitted on behalf of the City of Margate is $671,640 for all the breathing apparatus components. The matching amount for this grant for the City of Margate is 10% of the costs for the equipment. The total match amount will be $67,164 to the City of Margate if awarded the grant. If awarded the grant during FY2015, existing Fire Department funds in Operating Supplies Account #001-2010-522.52-15 will be used to fund the required cash match.
