APPROVING A CONTRACT WITH ART & SCULPTURE UNLIMITED (ASU) FOR CREATION AND INSTALLATION OF A BRONZE SCULPTURE OF KAYE STEVENS AT KAYE STEVENS PARK

BACKGROUND:
At the March 11th meeting, staff provided information and quotes on plaques, bronze busts and statues of Kaye Stevens to be placed in Kaye Stevens Park. At that meeting, the Board requested staff to commission services for a sculptor to create a life size bronze statue of Kaye Stevens and approved a budget for the project in an amount not exceed $35,000.
The lowest quote provided for a statue was from a foundry located in Miami, FL, Art & Sculpture Unlimited (ASU) owned and operated by sculptor Lazaro Valdes and his family. They have been offering bronze foundry services for twelve (12) years both locally and abroad. The foundry has been commissioned to create and restore several sculptures of public and private art pieces. Staff toured the facility and met with Mr. Valdes to discuss the process and timeframe to create the Kaye Stevens statue.
To assist in the creation of the statue, they will enlist the services of fine artist and sculptor, Nilda Comas MFA, NSS to create the model and mold of Ms. Stevens face and neck. Mr. Valdes will create the arms, hands and body of the sculpture. It is anticipated the process should be completed within four (4) months and cost $32,000 for statue and plaque.
A pedestal will have to be constructed and installed by a separate vendor prior to placement of the statue.
RECOMMENDATION: Approve an agreement with Art & Sculpture Unlimited for services to model, mold, and cast in bronze a sculpture of Kaye Stevens, including a bronze plaque and installation, to be placed in Kaye Stevens Park.
FISCAL IMPACT: Funds in the amount of $32,000 will have to be transferred from Contingency 140-0150-512-91.02 into Kaye Stevens ...
