BACKGROUND: The City was recently awarded the 2014 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) funding from the US Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for power lift stretchers and power stair chairs. On October 28, 2015, the City Commission formally accepted the grant. This equipment is the latest technology and has proven to reduce firefighter injuries caused by the lifting of patients and carrying patients up and down stairs. This equipment lifts patients automatically, eliminating the need for firefighters to rely on brute strength.
Stryker is the sole source manufacturer of power load stretchers. This stretcher system lifts and lowers the cots into and out of the ambulance, reducing spinal loads and the risk of cumulative trauma injuries. As part of the purchase, Stryker will provide a three year protection service. The power load stretchers will be installed by Ten-8 Fire Equipment, which is located the closest of the manufacturer's recommended installers to the City. Ten-8 will install five of the six stretchers being purchased because the remaining stretcher will be installed directly by the new rescue vehicle's manufacturer.
