Title

SPECIAL EVENTS FUNDING/DONATION REQUEST FROM AMERICAN LEGION POST 157 IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,000.

Body

BACKGROUND:                                           The James Carl Fredrick American Legion Post 157 has requested funding in the amount of $1,000 through the Special Events Funding/Donation Request Program. The Special Events Funding/Donation Request Program is open to organizations and individuals seeking funding from the City of Margate to provide for a public purpose as determined by the City Commission. The amount requested cannot exceed $1,000 per organization or individual. The American Legion Post 157 has met the requirements including being a non-profit organization in existence for at least twelve (12) months and providing a copy of their tax exempt certificate. City staff was advised by the American Legion Post 157 that they were unable to provide a copy of their last audit or a copy of their annual budget.

The American Legion Post 157 requests $1,000 to help cover the cost of providing a Thanksgiving meal for retired military members who may not have family in the South Florida area. Funds historically have been covered by membership funding. However, as membership has declined, so has funding availability. Requested funding would be used to purchase necessary food and supplies for Thanksgiving meals. The American Legion Post 157 has indicated that the total budget for this program is $2,500.

Last year, the American Legion Post 157 served 500 retired military members, of which 400 are Margate residents.

FISCAL IMPACT:                     The FY 2017 Budget includes funding in the City Commission-General Contribution budget (001-0110-511.82-15).
