Title

AMENDING RESOLUTION NO. 2016-244 RELATING TO THE PROVISION OF FIRE RESCUE SERVICES, FACILITIES AND PROGRAMS IN THE CITY OF MARGATE, FLORIDA; AMENDING THE VETERANS’ EXEMPTION; DIRECTING CORRECTIONS TO THE FIRE RESCUE ASSESSMENT ROLL.

Body

BACKGROUND:                     This proposed resolution is to resolve an issue with the implementation of the Fire Assessment Resolution for 2016. When sending the tax roll to the Tax Collector, Government Services Group (GSG) did not take into account the second code that determines if that household exemption is specific to the veteran or if it is applying to a surviving spouse.  As a result, twenty-six homes were not assessed as they should have been. The City’s resolution states that, “This exemption shall not apply to the surviving spouses of said qualified disabled veteran Owners.”

The contractor could have revised tax bills issued; however, those homes were not already billed for this fiscal year and have missed out on the highest early payment discounts.  The revenue to the City would be less than $6,000. This amendment to the fire assessment resolution provides for revisions to apply an exemption to be given to surviving spouses of qualified disabled veteran Owners so that the resolution accurately reflects the implementation of the assessment.
