Title
PUBLIC ART UTILITY BOX PROJECT ART SELECTIONS.
BACKGROUND: Public art on utility boxes are not only a great way to add color and culture to the City, but also a deterrent to graffiti and other illegal destruction of property. Located within the city limits, there are 36 boxes, of which, 24 are within the CRA district. Our Call to Artist application suggested themes related to the lifestyle in Margate including, but not limited to waterways, green spaces, and/or people (community).
The CRA’s Call to Artist application process concluded on July 17th with 253 submissions. An art selection committee was formed consisting of five (5) people who vetted the first phase of art submittals for the public art project.
Phase one of the Public Art Utility Box Project consists of 11 boxes (8 on Atlantic Boulevard, 2 on Coconut Creek Parkway, and 1 on Copans Road). The committee has narrowed down the submissions to 15 art pieces to be presented to the MCRA Board for discussion and approval of 11 final art pieces.
RECOMMENDATION: Discussion and approval of 11 final art pieces for phase one of the Public Art Utility Box Project.
FISCAL IMPACT: Funds have been allocated in 340-0510-512-67-02 Public Art Program in the amount of $25,000
