PROPOSAL TO NAME THE MULTIPURPOSE ROOM AT THE NORTHWEST FOCAL POINT SENIOR CENTER DISTRICT AFTER PAUL “PAULY” COHEN, BIG BAND LEADER AND FAMOUS TRUMPET PLAYER.
BACKGROUND: Paul Cohen was born in Brooklyn NY, on October 3rd, 1922. He started playing a musical instrument at the age of eight. While still in high school, Paul was asked to play in the 60-pc. “All-City Orchestra” in New York. Over the years he played with many big bands and musical organizations. Topping the list are his 5 years with the great Count Basie; and at various times Paul played with: Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey, Charlie Barnet, Tito Puente, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, and many more. He moved to Florida in 1998. Musicians come and go, but the Paul Cohen big band has been rehearsing in the spacious Northwest Focal Point Senior Center Multi-purpose room, for almost 20 years. Every Thursday afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, seniors come from the tri-county area to enjoy Paul “Pauly” Cohen’s big band melodies.
