Title

CONSIDERATION OF AN ORDINANCE TO PROHIBIT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ANY NEW SELF-SERVICE STORAGE USES WITHIN THE CITY OF MARGATE.

Body

BACKGROUND: On November 16, 2016, the City Commission approved a six-month moratorium via Ordinance 2016-15 for the approval of any new self-storage or similar type uses within the City of Margate.  A six-month extension to the existing six-month moratorium was approved on May 17, 2017 via Ordinance 2017-08 to provide for additional time for the City to consider potential changes to its Code pertaining to the impact of self-storage uses within the City of Margate.

At the August 23, 2017 City Commission Workshop, the City Commission directed staff to draft an ordinance to prohibit new self-service storage developments within the City due to a perceived saturation of the use.  The City Commission approved first reading of this ordinance on October 18, 2017.

RECOMMENDATION: The Development Review Committee (DRC) approved this item at the DRC meeting held on September 26, 2017. An excerpt from the draft meeting minutes is attached.  The Planning and Zoning Board approved this ordinance 4-1 at the Planning and Zoning Board meeting held on October 4, 2017.  An excerpt from the draft meeting minutes is attached.
