DISCUSSION & POSSIBLE ACTION: AUTHORIZATION TO PROCEED WITH COLLECTION OF BACK RENT FROM MARGATE CLEANERS
BACKGROUND: At the December 11, 2018, MCRA meeting, the Board directed the CRA attorney to move forward with eviction proceedings against Margate Cleaners, a tenant located at 6213 Margate Boulevard. Broward County ordered a Final Judgment for Eviction on February 22, 2019. The tenant surrendered the key and vacated the space on March 1, 2019.
The tenant owes back rent and late payment fees for six months (September, 2018 through February, 2019) and outstanding utilities totaling $4,501.80. The MCRA holds a security deposit and last month’s rent totaling $1,590.00, which leaves an outstanding net amount due to the MCRA of $2,911.80.
MCRA staff is looking for direction from the Board for authorization to legally proceed with the collection of back rent, late fees and utilities from Margate Cleaners in the amount of $2,911.80, plus legal fees to date of $1,066.65, for a total of $3,978.45.
RECOMMENDATION: Requesting direction from the Board
FISCAL IMPACT: Potential recovery of $3,978.45.
