Title

APPROVING A LETTER FROM THE MARGATE POLICE DEPARTMENT DOCUMENTING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SCHOOL BOARD OF BROWARD COUNTY’S PROMISE (PREVENTING RECIDIVISM THROUGH OPPORTUNITIES, MENTORING, INTERVENTIONS, SUPPORT & EDUCATION) PROGRAM; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

Body

BACKGROUND: The School Board of Broward County’s PROMISE (Preventing Recidivism through Opportunities, Mentoring, Interventions, Support & Education) Program (“Promise Program”) is an alternative program for students who have committed a behavioral infraction that would normally lead to a juvenile delinquency arrest.

The Promise Program also addresses students who have committed infractions related to bullying and harassment.

The Margate Police Department concluded that they do not support the Promise Program, based on the manner in which the Promise Program is being implemented.

Chief of Police, Jonathan Shaw, will submit a letter to Robert Runcie, Broward County Superintendent of Schools, formalizing the Margate Police Department’s position that they do not support the current implementation of Promise Program and suggest that local law enforcement partner with School Board officials to have input for suggested revisions to the program.
