DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION - SIGN CODE.

Body

BACKGROUND: Recent code compliance action regarding windows signs has generated a lot of questions and comments. The sign code was changed last year that increased the area of window signs allowed from 25% of the window area to 50%. In late August, 2018, the Development Services Department prepared a flyer to alert business owners of the new requirements. (Attached) The staff hand- distributed the flyer to those businesses that exceeded the 50% limit. The flyer clearly informed the business owner of the November 2, 2018 deadline for compliance.

After the deadline passed, the staff began working with the business owners to achieve compliance. To be “business friendly”, the first contact was a verbal notification of the violation and what alterations needed to be done. A follow-up, generally 10 days later was then held. If the window sign was found to be out of compliance, a notice of violation was issued.

In July, staff began to reinforce compliance efforts. Attached are the weekly reports of the compliance action. The results have been similar to other code compliance action where some businesses comply immediately and others remain out of compliance.
