BACKGROUND:

Repairs to Bridge on NW 76 Avenue:

The Florida Department of Transportation performed an annual inspection on the bridge over the Ripple canal on NW 76 Avenue 0.2 mile North of Atlantic Blvd. and rated it a “Functionally Obsolete”. The Public Works Department has hired one of the City’s continuing service contractors to evaluate the bridge and prepare documentation to bid out the repairs.

Repairs to Bridge on Margate Blvd.:

The Florida Department of Transportation performed an annual inspection on the bridge over the Margate canal on Margate Blvd. just West of SR-7 and rated it a “Functionally Obsolete”. The Public Works Department has hired one of the City’s continuing service contractors to evaluate the bridge and prepare documentation to bid out the repairs.

Replace or Repair Damaged Valley Curbing in Paradise Gardens Subdivisions:

The City of Margate was originally created as a municipality corporation in 1955 that was known as the Town of Margate. In 1961, the Town of Margate was incorporated as a City. In the early 1970’s while the city was growing subdivisions of housing were being developed. One of these subdivisions is titled Paradise Gardens and it has several sections within the subdivision.

When Paradise Gardens was developed they constructed sidewalks with adjacent valley curbs and gutters that over time have become cracked and dropped which causes poor drainage in the area by not allowing the runoff water from storms to travel in the curbing to designated catch basins.

The entire Paradise Gardens development requires replacement of the valley curb and gutters as well as replacement of adjacent sidewalks in areas where the sidewalk has become effected by the curb and gutters. By replacing the curbing and gutters the development will be better protected from flooding and create a better pedestrian mode of transportation.

Milling and Paving of Various Roads:

Arterial, collector and local roads within the City were last resurfaced or treated to prolong the life of the asphalt in 2008. This project would be to perform a mill and overlay on the roads that had been treated which are now in need of milling and overlaying to restore the roadway and begin the life cycle of the asphalt again.

The Public Works Department has contracted with a company that does pavement management and will provide the City with an asphalt conditions study. This study will identify those roads that require milling and paving as well as sealing with preservatives.

RECOMMENDATION:

It is the recommendation that the City Commission approve these three projects that have been presented to the Broward County Transportation Surtax Rehabilitation and Maintenance Projects for Cycle 1 (FY-2020) for funding.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Until the MPO advises the City if this project will be funded the fiscal impact is uncertain.
