Title
DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION - JULY 4TH EVENT

Body

BACKGROUND: The City of Margate's 4th of July events typically include a parade in the morning, followed by a BBQ at City Hall, a pool party at Calypso Cove, food trucks, music, dancing, and a spectacular fireworks show to close out the night. The day long events attract around 15,000 people.

Due to COVID-19 we will not be able to carry out the typical Margate 4th of July. Many of the Broward cities that have 4th of July events have canceled their activities with only a few making modifications to their events such as having fireworks with no attendees (live streaming). I've attached a survey of cities and their 4th of July plans for this year.

Update: at the 05/20/2020 Commission Meeting, the Commission requested alternate proposals for fireworks to be brought back before the Commission at the next meeting. We were able to obtain two proposals in the limited amount of time. Staff's recommendation is to select Pyrotecnico to provide fireworks. Please note that we are evaluating an alternate site for the display as we do not have 100% assurance that FDOT will permit the City to close SR7. The alternate site will be Margate Sports Complex.

The Commission also requested a logistics plan for a 4th of July Parade that included City vehicles that would navigate throughout the City. A detailed logistics plan is still being worked on but will primarily be focused on major roadways of residential neighborhoods. Please know that we will not be able to reach every street/neighborhood in Margate, but intend on mapping the route to achieve a high probability of visibility. The parade is planned to be split into three segments to allow for resting periods. To ensure safety of the City Staff participating, the parade will include no more than 20 vehicles (Commission, PD, FD, PW, and Parks) including the police escort.
