A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF MARGATE, FLORIDA, APPROVING CITY SPONSORSHIP OF THE REGISTRATION FEES FOR MARGATE RESIDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN CITY OF MARGATE RECREATION SPORTS LEAGUES IN THE 2020-2021 SEASON; PROVIDING FOR FUNDING FROM THE CITIZEN PROJECT INITIATIVES ACCOUNT; PROVIDING FOR BUDGET AMENDMENT; PROVIDING FOR EFFECTIVE DATE.

Body

BACKGROUND:                                           At the May 20, 2020, City Commission meeting, consensus was provided by the City Commission for the City Manager to research the fiscal and administrative impact for City sponsorship of the registration fees for Margate residents to participate in City sports leagues for every sports group. Staff estimates that there are approximately 736 Margate children that play on one or more of the following Margate Sports: Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, and Swimming. The average registration fee per child is $115 for an estimated financial impact of $80,000. If the City Commission approves this sponsorship program, Staff recommends that it be limited to one sponsorship per child. For example, a child would only be eligible for a basketball sponsorship, not a basketball and baseball sponsorship. Staff also recommends that this sponsorship program be limited to the FY 2020-2021 season.

Funding would be provided from the Citizens Project Initiatives account and the appropriation of these funds would need to be included in the next budget amendment.

RECOMMENDATION:                     For discussion.
